Benefits of nasal breathing
Switching from habitual mouth breathing to nasal breathing is one of the simplest, lowest-cost changes a person can make. Here's what the research and clinical experience point to.
Better oxygen delivery to tissues
Nasal breathing slows air intake and helps maintain the carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels needed for hemoglobin to release oxygen into cells (the Bohr effect). Counterintuitively, breathing less — through the nose — can mean your tissues get more oxygen, not less.
Improved sleep quality
Nasal breathing is associated with fewer awakenings, less snoring, and better oxygen saturation through the night. Mouth breathing during sleep dries the airway and can worsen snoring and sleep-disordered breathing.
Filtered, humidified, cleaner air
The nasal passages trap particulates and pathogens and add moisture, reducing irritation to the lower airway and lungs before air ever reaches them.

Habitual mouth breathing in childhood is associated with altered jaw growth, a narrower palate, and airway changes that can predispose a child to breathing problems later in life. Encouraging nasal breathing early supports healthy structural development.
