Most people never think about how they breathe — only that they do. But two things about your breathing, largely invisible to you day to day, have a measurable effect on your health, energy, performance, sleep, and stress levels: how you breathe, and how much you breathe.

As a certified breathing instructor, I help people retrain both, using simple, evidence-informed techniques you can practice anywhere.

How you breathe

The nose isn't just an entry point for air. It filters, warms, and humidifies the air you breathe, produces nitric oxide that improves oxygen uptake in the lungs, and helps regulate breathing volume so your body gets what it actually needs — no more, no less.

Nasal breathing is how the human body was designed to breathe — at rest, during sleep, and for most daily activity, including most exercise. Mouth breathing bypasses all of this, and tends to encourage the faster, shallower breathing pattern closely linked with stress — it's meant for emergency use only, such as intense physical exertion, not as an everyday default.

How much you breathe

Separately from nose vs. mouth, most people also breathe a greater volume of air than their body actually needs — a pattern called overbreathing. This lowers carbon dioxide (CO₂) below the level your body relies on to relax airways, release oxygen into tissues, and stay calm.

Training toward lighter, reduced-volume breathing — the foundation of this approach — gently rebuilds your tolerance to CO₂ and can ease breathlessness, improve sleep, and reduce stress, often within weeks of consistent practice.

Together, these two shifts — breathing through the nose, and breathing less air overall — are the foundation of everything I teach.

Two different goals, one underlying skill

One branch of this work was developed to relieve symptoms — asthma, breathlessness, anxiety, poor sleep. Another branch was developed for performance — endurance, focus, and the calm, clear-headed state athletes and high performers call flow. Both rest on the same skill: a quieter, more efficient breath, and a nervous system that isn't running in overdrive.

Which means this work is just as relevant if nothing is "wrong" — if you're an athlete chasing a faster time, or an executive who wants a steadier mind under pressure — as it is if you're managing a diagnosed condition.
